WHO AM I?

 

My name is Christopher Carnrick. I am a Certified Starch Solution Counselor/Trainer. I was the owner of two restaurants in Seattle, Washington “Mame’s Caberet” and “Speedy Gonzales”. Founder of Casa Cebadillas, in Torrox Pueblo Spain which provided themed dinner parties as well as a Culinary School. Author of the book “Kitchen Disasters, Solutions and Substitutions” and co-author of “Dinner for Six at 8:00” and regular TV personality on a variety of cooking shows on CBS, NBC and FOX networks. I love food and creating a festive atmosphere for friends and guests. I was one of those Chef’s people said, “You can tell he knows good food look at his belly”. Today, at 60 years old, I am a former fatty, F2 and currently a Starchivore! I lost 80 pounds, stopped taking medications and became healthy eating all the way! Including while changing my environment to Spain, with all the wine and food! I wanted to share this adventure with you in the hopes that you too can find the success I did. I was overweight, sick and taking multiple prescription medications. I went through the motions of daily life carrying 80 pounds of excess fat, and it made me miserable. WHY PLANT BASED DIETS WIN OVER THE STANDARD AMERICAN DIET

Plant based diets has many advantages over what people view as a ‘normal’ way to eat. The standard American diet is all about burgers, fries, milkshakes and apple pie. Add in the mac-and-cheese, hot dogs and sausage links that most people consume on a routine basis.

So it’s clear where ‘normal’ got us. It got us FAT.


That is why obesity, heart disease and diabetes are running rampant in the U.S. and throughout much of the world today. Even when people try to clean up their diets, they merely switch from one source of animal to another. For instance, they may exchange chicken for hamburger meat.


Chicken is a leaner meat, but it’s still unhealthy when you consume too much or smother it in cheese and mayo. If you really want to eat clean and live healthy to prevent and reverse life-threatening disease, you need to exchange a plant-based diet for the good ol’ American diet that you probably grew up eating. There are quite a few reasons why plant-based diets can keep you alive longer and make sure you enjoy your life more.

MORE NUTRIENTS, LESS JUNK

Plant-based diets that emphasize starches provide your body with more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Your body needs this nourishment to function properly and provide energy so that you make it through each day successfully. As long as you don’t ruin your plant foods by loading them up with cheese, meat and unhealthy condiments, you will always get more nourishment from a plant-based diet than the traditional American diet.

NATURAL CALORIE REDUCTION

The caloric content for a bowl of whole grain rice seasoned with fresh herbs and vegetables will always be lower than a bowl of processed boil-in-the-bag refined white rice smothered in cheese sauce and chicken. Strawberry cheesecake and a bowl of fresh strawberries will equally crush your craving for something sweet, but the strawberries contain far fewer calories.


Whole, natural foods consumed without the addition of high-calorie condiments and meats allow you to reduce your calorie consumption without counting every calorie you consume. Eating fewer calories than your body requires to function is the most basic formula for weight loss, and a plant-based diet naturally answers the formula for you.


The standard American diet makes it too complicated because you have to control the calories of those high-caloric foods by eating less. Go with plants, and you will eat more and feel more satisfied while weighing less!

EASY DOES IT WITH A NEW PLANT BASED DIET

Once you learn how to consume a plant based diet correctly, you will see how simple it actually is to eat healthy. You get to toss out the rules that you’ve learned over the years without guilt because you now know that they don’t work for your body anyway. You get to focus on eating real food with natural flavors rather than wondering where your overly-processed food came from or what the chemicals your food contains will do to your body.


Plant-based foods are real foods found in nature, and they make meal planning and preparation easy. These are foods you can feed your family without worry or guilt. GIVE FAT A BREAK

Here’s one more thing to think about: plant-based diets are naturally low in fat. Your body will stop storing excess fat on your hips and thighs when you stop feeding it an overload of fat. Plant foods are also more filling, so you can eat less while feeling more satisfied. Even further, they don’t contain all of those chemicals that make you crave more food when you aren’t even hungry.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT A STARCH DIET:

No! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about the vegan lifestyle. You don’t need to consume meat products to get protein. The human body doesn’t need as much protein as many people believe, and you can get what you need through vegetables, beans, legumes, seeds and whole grains.

It’s common for diets to recommend “healthy” oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, instead of “unhealthy” oils, such as vegetable or corn oils. The Starch Diet discourages the use of oil entirely because they contribute nothing but fat to your body. You can get omega-3 fatty acids from other natural foods included in the diet, so there’s no reason to consume oil. This is especially true if you’re trying to cut fat in order to lose weight and protect your heart.

Increasing your activity level and enjoying some form of exercise each day will help you lose weight faster, improve your cardiovascular system and strengthen your muscles so that you’re less prone to injuries. Exercise can also improve your balance and self esteem, but you don’t need to kill yourself with high-intensity workouts. Getting out for a walk each day is a big step forward if your current lifestyle is sedentary.

You may find that you enjoy more vigorous workouts as you start to lose weight and become accustomed to moving your body more, but don’t stress out over workouts. Keep it simple, and find something that you really enjoy so that you can keep up the routine long term.

Artificial sweeteners are just that: artificial. They aren’t natural foods, and your body doesn’t know how to process them properly. They may even lead to disease, especially when consumed in large amounts on a routine basis. Sugar is a natural product that can add some sweetness to your food, but you should limit your consumption to small amounts only when it is truly needed. Learn to enjoy the natural flavor of your food, and you will find that you don’t need a ton of sweetener.

HOW FOODS HIGH IN STARCH WILL MAKE YOU THIN

Before we start discussing why foods high in starch can make you thin, let’s clear up one thing: all carbohydrates are not equal. If you want to get the maximum benefit from a plant-based diet, you need to consume mostly natural foods that haven’t been extensively processed. These are foods that retain their natural nutrients while processed versions are stripped of their nutritional value at least partially.


For instance, refined white rice isn’t as healthy as whole grain rice. Refined rice is made by removing the outer portion of the rice grain, and you can guess where most of nutritional content is located. To get the benefits listed below, you need to select the healthiest, most natural version of your high-starch foods.

FILL UP WITHOUT THE CALORIES WITH FOODS HIGH IN STARCH

Your body naturally stores fat when you consume more calories than your body can burn over the course of a day, week or month. Starchy carbohydrates are naturally lower in calories than most meats and dairy products, and they are heavier in your stomach.

You will naturally eat less starchy food without feeling deprived or going hungry. This means you naturally take in fewer calories without feeling deprived or focusing on restricting your food consumption.


If you really love food and tend to eat large meals, you can consume larger quantities of healthy plant foods without packing in nearly as many calories. For instance, a large salad loaded with fresh vegetables and perhaps some chickpeas with a light vinegar-based dressing will contain far fewer calories than a double cheeseburger with a side of fries. The salad will also fill you up quickly while the lack of nutrients in the cheeseburger will leave your body craving more food.

NUTRIENTS = ENERGY

The more you move, the easier it is to maintain a healthy body weight. You need energy to move more, and plant-based, starchy foods are loaded with nutrients that produce energy. Carbohydrates are what sustain your energy levels over long periods of time, so you lose energy when you cut them out or reduce them severely. Fill up on wholesome plant foods to feel more energetic, move more, and lose weight as a result.

 
NO HUNGER ALLOWED

Starchy carbohydrates are broken down slowly after consumption, so they stay in your stomach longer. They are also loaded with natural fiber which is heavy in your stomach. This allows you to feel full for a longer period of time, cutting down on hunger and that sense of deprivation that often makes you give up on diets in frustration. Some chemicals in processed foods can actually make you feel hungry even when your stomach is full, but that won’t happen with natural starchy foods.

REGULATE BLOOD SUGAR NATURALLY

Studies are showing that carbohydrates can naturally regulate blood sugar, helping to control the risk of diabetes naturally. If you always assumed that diabetes have to stay away from carbs, it’s time to learn that the right carbs consumed in the right way can actually help with diabetes and many other medical conditions.

In fact, this is the simplest diet you could ever consume. You don’t have to give up foods because you can simply find healthier alternatives that are in line with your healthy way of life. For instance, if you love white rice, just make the switch to whole-grain brown or wild rice. Better yet, expand your horizons and give millet, wheat berries, quinoa, buckwheat and bulgur a try. These are all nutrient-rich, natural foods that will nourish and energize your body naturally.

GET TO THE ROOTS

Here’s something exciting about a high-carb diet: you can eat your white potatoes without guilt! Potatoes and other roots will fill your stomach up while nourishing your body and keeping your energy running for a long time. In addition to the basic potato, expand your horizons and give some of these roots a try:

  • Celery Root
  • Jicama
  • Parsnips
  • Rutabaga
  • Tapioca
  • Taro Root
  • Water chestnuts


If you don’t know what some of these things are, look them up and find them in your local store or farmer’s market. Exploration and discovering new food loves is part of the excitement of embracing a healthier diet.

If the thought of enjoying a bowl of squash and zucchini turns your stomach, you haven’t learned how to make it to the satisfaction of your taste buds yet. But you will because there are thousands of recipes using squash online, and they incorporate a variety of cooking methods, ingredients, textures and flavor profiles. You can even hide it in homemade soup if you just want the nutritious benefits, and there are tons of nutritious benefits in squash.

Besides the standard butternut squash, think about spaghetti squash, buttercup and pumpkins. Go for a turban squash or banana squash. Keep trying until you find one that hits your palate with pleasure.

The list of foods of delicious foods that you can enjoy on a high carbohydrate diet could go on for much longer, but you get the point. Don’t focus on what foods aren’t healthy for your new diet. It’s about giving your body what it really wants and needs the majority of the time.
